Scientific evidence emanating from the evaluation of the China-Gates TB project on TB control has contributed to the development of China’s national five-year TB control plan. In addition, the evaluation team led by Duke Global Health Institute and DKU worked closely with its collaborators from the China CDC and national TB policy leaders to support provinces in introducing multisource financing for TB treatment, including health insurance coverage, medical assistance and government funding, to reduce the out-of-pocket burden on families.



The Duke Kunshan Master of Science in Global Health program was launched in August 2014. Drawing on faculty, experience, and expertise from the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI), while supporting students in research around the world, the program and curriculum can be tailored to your individual interests and career goals. Each student’s path through the program will be slightly different but united by a common recognition that an interdisciplinary approach and multidisciplinary understanding are critical to solving complex global health problems.

The program offered by the Duke Graduate School is housed in Duke Kunshan University and adheres to the academic and administrative policies of the Duke Graduate School. The degree requires 38 credits of coursework, a minimum of 10 weeks fieldwork experience, and a thesis that is defended in your final semester. Co-curricular requirements, such as research seminars and fieldwork preparation workshops, support your progress throughout your studies. Meeting the requirements of the MSc-GH program takes at least three semesters, but most students continue for a fourth semester in order to broaden their education through further coursework while completing their thesis.

Student Learning Objectives and Outcomes

To prepare students to be effective researchers in the field of global health:

  • Digest and synthesize foundational literature and research studies into an interdisciplinary framework of global health.
  • Understand and apply a range of foundational quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Discuss and apply concepts of responsible conduct of research in international and cross-cultural settings.
  • Design and implement a research project in a cross-cultural setting; collect and analyze data focusing on health disparities.

To develop successful professionals for competitive positions in the field of global health (such as industry, government, NGOs, clinical practice, and academia)

  • Demonstrate interdisciplinary expertise and versatility, including recognition that a multidisciplinary and multi-sector approach to health is viewed as essential to reduce health disparities and improve global health.
  • Demonstrate depth within specific methodological skills sets.
  • Communicate research and academic principles clearly and professionally both orally and in written form.
  • Identify a diverse array of career and academic opportunities within the field of global health, regardless of their intended path.
