The “World’s Top 2% Scientists 2025” list—compiled by Professor John P. A. Ioannidis and his research team at Stanford University, with data provided by Elsevier—has recently been released.
Four full-time faculty members,Professor Lijing Yan, Associate Professor Qian Long, Associate Professor Chenkai Wu, and Assistant Professor Sajid Umar from Duke Kunshan University’s Global Health Research Center have been named among the world’s top scientists in their respective fields (Cardiovascular System and Hematology, Tropical Medicine, Geriatrics, and Zoology).

Launched in 2019, the “World’s Top 2% Scientists” ranking is an influential global database jointly developed by Professor Ioannidis’s team at Stanford University and Elsevier. The 2025 edition marks its eighth annual update. Using the Science-Metrix classification system, the dataset covers 20 scientific fields and 174 subfields.Researchers are selected based on their Scopus Author Profile and a composite citation index (C-score) that considers both self-citations and non-self-citations. The ranking includes the top 100,000 scientists worldwide or those who rank within the top 2% in their specific subfield.
The main evaluation indicators of the ranking include total citations, H-index (which measures both the quantity and impact of a researcher’s academic output), HM-index (which accounts for co-authorship contributions to citations), citations of single-authored or first-authored papers, a composite score (combining multiple citation-based metrics), and the number of retractions. The list is widely regarded as an objective measure of scientists’ long-term research performance and global academic influence.
