Bridging Worlds, Uniting Eras: My Journey Across Three Continents with Duke

Abstract

Over the course of his master’s studies at Duke Kunshan University, Chenxinan Ma has embarked on a remarkable academic and personal journey, traversing three continents: Asia, North America, and Europe. The diverse settings and experiences contributed to his personal development at various levels, exposed him to multiple professional environments, and offered him opportunities to engage in different types of research. In this seminar, Chenxinan will share his journey with different Duke Institutions (DKU, Duke Graduate School and Sanford School of Public Policy, and Duke-NUS Medical School) and the insights he gained from these experiences. He will outline his search for internship and research opportunities and how he prepared for PhD program and internship applications. Finally, he will provide a brief overview of Singapore’s healthcare system and introduce the Doctoral Programs at Duke-NUS Medical School.

Chenxinan Ma

Mr. Chenxinan Ma completed 5-year medical education with a Bachelor of Medicine degree at Soochow University and his master’s education at Duke Kunshan University. Chenxinan conducted his fieldwork study in the USA and was a team lead for one Bass Connection project about hypertension control in Durham. In 2023, Chenxinan participated in the Duke Global Policy Program (DGP) in Geneva and he was in the global health track. In the summer of 2023, Chenxinan interned at the Migration Health Division of the International Organization for Migration (UN Migration), where his work focused on health assessment for migrants and refugees. Currently, he is a Year-1 PhD student specializing in Health Systems and Services Research at Duke-NUS Medical School, National University of Singapore. Chenxinan’s research interests center on the management and control of non-communicable diseases and implementation science and his PhD research project involves conducting a clinical trial aimed at improving care for patients with chronic kidney disease in Singapore.
