On April 22, the Duke Kunshan University “This is Global Health!” Symposium Series will collaborate with the Distinguished Speaker Series to host a special event, featuring Prof. Jian Zhou, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University. In his keynote address, he will reflect on his 40-year journey in education and career—from being inspired as an undergraduate by Academician Zhaoyou Tang to becoming a leading surgeon, scholar, and hospital administrator. A panel discussion will follow, featuring Prof. Fan Wu, Vice Dean of Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University. Together, they will explore the challenges and reflections involved in improving global health and illuminating millions of lives. This is a dialogue about personal growth, legacy, and mission—dedicated to everyone seeking a moment of “being inspired.”

Jian Zhou

Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Professor and Doctoral Supervisor; President of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University; Executive Vice Director of the Liver Cancer Institute, Fudan University. President of the Asia-Pacific Primary Liver Cancer Expert (APPLE) Alliance; Chair-Elect of the Oncology Society of the Chinese Medical Association; Vice President and Secretary-General of the Surgical Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, among other roles.
With 35 years of experience in hepatobiliary tumor research, he has performed over 10,000 hepatobiliary tumor and liver transplant surgeries as the lead surgeon. These include Asia’s first ALPPS procedure (Associating Liver Partition and Portal vein ligation for Staged hepatectomy) and three internationally pioneering liver transplantation techniques. He has achieved a series of original research outcomes in the early diagnosis and personalized treatment of liver cancer, the development of innovative surgical procedures, and the study of metastasis and recurrence mechanisms.
As the first or corresponding author (including co-author), he has published 154 SCI papers in journals such as The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, Cell, Journal of Clinical Oncology, The Lancet Oncology, and Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy (STTT), with an H-index of 100. He has successively led 30 research projects, including the National 863 Program, Key Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Original Exploration Program Project of the NSFC, and the National Key R&D Program. He has received the National Science and Technology Progress Award five times (including once as the Primary Contributor and twice as the Second Contributor). He has also been honored with awards such as the Tan Jiazhen Life Science Innovation Award and the Wu Jieping Medical Innovation Award.
Fan Wu

Wu Fan, female, is a non-party intellectual and holds a Doctor of Medicine degree. She is a Second-Level Professor/Chief Physician and doctoral supervisor, an expert receiving the Special Allowance of the State Council, a Leading Talent of Shanghai, a Shanghai Outstanding Academic Leader, and a nationally recognized young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions in health and family planning. She currently serves as Vice Dean of Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University.
Prof. Wu Fan has been engaged in disease control, public health research, and teaching management for over 30 years, publishing over 100 SCI papers in top-tier international journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Peking University core journals Environmental and Occupational Medicine and Shanghai Journal of Preventive Medicine. As the lead recipient, she has won the First Prize of National Teaching Achievement Award, the Special Prize of Shanghai Outstanding Teaching Achievement Award, the First Prize of Shanghai Decision-Making Research Achievement Award, and the First Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award. As a key participant, she has also received multiple awards, including the Special Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she served as a member of the Shanghai COVID-19 Prevention and Control Leadership Team Expert Group and a member of the China-WHO Joint Mission on COVID-19 Prevention and Control.
