Duke Kunshan University Commencement Celebrates Global Health and Medical Physics Graduate Students

Duke Kunshan University held a graduation ceremony for the inaugural classes of the global health and medical physics master’s degree programs in the campus water pavilion May 4. The 2016 graduates of the two programs come from five countries, and were awarded master of science degrees from Duke University.

Reflecting on his living and learning experiences at Duke Kunshan University, Medical Physics student Hongyuan Wang, described the past two years as a most rewarding experience of his life. ‘Working with the excellent professors and outstanding classmates at Duke Kunshan University has taught us the true meaning of diligence, perseverance and optimism. In return, as the inaugural cohort of Medical Physics graduate students, we have been a part of shaping the culture of this university, and making it a better place for studying and living,’ said Wang. ‘I truly believe that Duke Kunshan will become a university of great influence in China.’

‘This graduation ceremony represents a major milestone in the development of Duke Kunshan University,’ said Professor Patrick Moreton, associate dean for graduate programs at Duke Kunshan University. ‘We will be sad to say goodbye to our first class of students in our Master of Science in Global Health and Medical Physics programs as they move on to successful and meaningful careers, but we are all extremely proud of what they have accomplished and the legacy of excellence that they will leave behind for future students.’

The graduation ceremony was presided over by Professor Haiyan Gao, vice chancellor for academic affairs at Duke Kunshan University, and was joined by Chancellor Liu Jingnan, Executive Vice Chancellor Denis Simon, and Professor James Dobbins, the associate vice provost and director of the Office of Duke Kunshan University Programs at Duke University .

 

‘Dream Big, Live with Integrity, and Make Your Life Count’

In his commencement address, Dobbins earned an uproarious applause from attendees with comments that encouraged the students to embrace three different types of courage ‘ the courage to dream big dreams, to be men and women of integrity, and to make their lives count.

‘It takes a willingness to not take the easy road ‘ the willingness to take risks,’ said Dobbins, ‘The small decisions we make day by day are what define us ‘ because those things demonstrate the kind of person we really are.’

Faculty Members Receive Special Honors

In recognition of their high-quality teaching, James Bowsher, associate professor of medical physics, Deedra McClearn, lecturer in medical physics, and Cheey-Ruey Hsieh, research professor of global health, received the Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award presented by Wei Zhu and Wanbing Gu on behalf of the Medical Physics and Global Health graduating classes. Edie Allen, English language instructor at Duke Kunshan’s Language and Culture Center, was also honored with a special Dean’s Recognition Award for her outstanding service to the graduate programs.

Faculty Representatives Receive Honors

Duke Kunshan’s newest alumni will soon be serving and studying at leading institutions around the world. Several have accepted positions in Ph.D. programs in United States, Japan and Ireland, while others have received job offers or secured internship positions at organizations including the Cancer Hospital Affiliated to Peking University, the International Organization of Migration in Geneva, and the Global Health Research Center at Duke Kunshan University.

The Duke Kunshan University Master of Science in Global Health program is a new approach to learning about ways to prevent disease; the social, economic, political and environmental causes of diseases; and effective strategies to increase health equity among the world’s rich and poor.

Emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration, research experiences, and mentorship from expert faculty, the program prepares graduates to make an impact in the world. Students work with a faculty member to complete a field-based project in Asia or other locations around the world. Those who successfully complete the requirements of the program receive a Master of Science degree from Duke University in USA.

 

About Duke Kunshan Master of Science in Medical Physics Program

The Duke Kunshan Master of Science in Medical Physics program provides the educational foundation and basic clinical knowledge needed for a career in medical physics, and prepares graduates for employment in academia, industry, clinical services, government facilities and beyond. The curriculum features a blended learning environment that combines in-classroom instruction with clinical practicum training, field work and thesis research.

Students in the Medical Physics program spend at least one semester of thesis research and classroom studies at Duke University in the U.S. Students successfully completing the requirements of the program receive a Master of Science degree from Duke University in the USA.
