Duke Kunshan University and nine other Chinese universities recently launched the Chinese Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CCUGH) in Beijing. Shenglan Tang, M.D., director of the DKU Global Health Research Center, will serve as vice chairman of the CCUGH governing council. The consortium’s objective is to share resources among Chinese universities to advance development in global health. The other nine founding universities are: Central South University, Fudan University, Kunming Medical University, Peking University, Peking Union Medical College, Sun Yat-sen University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Wuhan University and Zhejiang University.
‘The DKU Global Health Research Center will not only undertake cutting edge research concerning people’s health in China and other low- and middle-income countries, but will also facilitate the research collaboration between the members of CCUGH and their counterparts in Africa and other Asian countries,” Tang said.
The consortium aims to establish a long-term collaborative relationship among member institutions based on the principles of voluntariness, equality, cooperation and development. Members will share resources, knowledge and experience to develop global health practitioners, build up the field and provide social services.
To ensure the consortium’s sustainable growth, member institutions are encouraged to establish long-term partnerships with both international and domestic institutions to enhance the quality and reputation of their education, training, research and services. The Consortium encourages member institutions to proactively explore solutions to new issues and demands emerging from global health research. Chinese universities with active global health teaching, research and consultation programs are eligible to apply for membership in the CCUGH.
Professor Liu Peilong from the Global Health Department of the Public Health School of Peking University was elected chair of the CCUGH governing council; Professors Qian Xu from Fudan University and Shenglan Tang from Duke Kunshan University were elected vice chairs. The Board Secretariat is based in Peking University.
